Meeting the neighbors.

So, after a mildly productive afternoon (captain called with a great story that I shall summarize for you at a more appropriate time), I came home to a frantic neighbor. Water was flooding into her apartment across the hall from upstairs. No one lives upstairs and there is no true emergency number here for maintenance (you leave a message). So, I started emptying anything that could hold water and passing it over to her. She kept going on about God and what goes around comes around and evil temptations sending floods.

As we wait for help to arrive, another neighbor from the other side of my unit comes over. They are buddies and also know the guy catty corner across the hall. Mary (across the hall) seems nice, but is definitely a little bit batty. Evidently she just ended a relationship with a guy here in the complex and is sure that God is for some reason sending difficulties into her life to get back at her for being stupid and pursuing a romance with him. (The guy, not God silly.)

Jay (apartment beheind me) is a middle aged gentleman from Illinois. He knows where Trumbull, NE is (wow!) since he used to truck. Basically, we just stood there and tried to calm Mary down as her apartment continued to flood and she started to rant about paying rent and being moved.

In comes Greg who lives beside Mary. He is an airport limo driver (nice connection eh?) who is moving out in November. Seems like a nice guy. He came in, surveyed his apartment, and left them to clean out his carpets.

As we waited for the carpet cleaners, Mary continues to rant/preach about her sins. As I come in and out of my apartment, she talks of us going for sushi with Greg. Okay, cool. I have friendly neighbors. Later, as I come out to dump my trash, she asks if I am her age. She is 39, I tell her that I am 26 and she asks what I do. I tell her and she asks if I had to go to college for it.
"Yes" I reply. "I have a Masters in Counseling Psychology."

Why I felt I needed to share the degree, I have no idea. I can see most of you just cringing as you read that. Yeah, you guessed it. "Seriously? Sweetie, we need to have some sessions and girl talk. I should come over and we can chat while you do your psychology thing."

Captain, you have told me numerous times about horror stories when you reveal a background in psychology. Well, this is my first official disaster. Then, the three of them continue to talk about how big of a dump this place is. Oh dear. Well, Greg has lived here for two years, Jay has lived here for longer, and Mary just moved in. So far, I have had no problems. I mean really, like a busted pipe indicates a dive. Happens all the time. That's why they created renter's insurance. I hope this is just high maintenance people living in economical surroundings. Hmmm......

BTW-This nickname thing is too fun. Kind of like building my own universe!

Unanswered prayers

Can't focus. Perhaps it has something to do with all of the work that I need to get done in the next few weeks, but perhaps it has to do with a late night phone call Saturday night. I was bothered by it all day yesterday and last night until I figured out the reason for it. Full moon. Yup, continuing support for my theory that men "cycle" with the moon. Women have 7 days that we are "off" according to many sources. I have found that three days before and three days after a full moon, men are off. Moon cycles are 28 days, our cycles are 28 days. Things that you usually do seem to set them off and sometimes, they simply blindside you.

This brings me to my title. Unanswered prayers. When I was in high school, I always wondered if I would ever be in the position of all of those people that wrote broken hearted songs. The ones where the girl becomes the one that got away. I always wondered if some guy would ever feel that way about me, or perhaps would just think of me whenever the song comes on the radio. Well, too bad for me, I am. I got a phone call from X (the ex). Oh man. Haven't spoken in a few weeks since I told him to either make me a true ex-girlfriend and quite talking to me or treat me like a friend. (He seems to think that I am always available, gets upset when I don't answer the phone, make jealous declarations when I hang with other guys....blah, blah, blah.) So he leaves a message last week. He broke up with his girlfriend. I don't call back. He calls two more times. I don't return them. So what does X do? Ambush.

At 2:30 am, I get a phone call. I just answer at that hour. It MUST be important for anyone to be calling. As I put the phone to my ear, the name on the caller ID registers. It's X. NO!!! Dangit! Too late, you answered, now you have to talk to him. After he goes on for about 5 minutes, I start to feel ill. Physically ill. That's what happens when I wake up unexpectantly from mid REM sleep. End of call, he wants to talk tomorrow. So, I call on Sunday (Hey, it prevents the ambush/guilt trip.)

I get to hear how he is better off without her, how they broke up, how she is now involved with some 45 year old lecher. Then, he drops it. The bombshell that I though would never, ever come. He wants to move. No, not to Florida, but if I were still in NE, perhaps he would move close to me and we could try it again. What!?!? Was he not present in our relationship? Seriously! X thinks that the main problem was distance. What about the arguments? The drinking issue? The fact that he has no direction in his life? Not to mention the fact that he enjoys shocking people with offensive humor and I want to be liked by EVERYONE.

I couldn't even say anything. I did argue that him visiting would not be a good idea. Not next week, not next month, not next January that he is looking into ticket prices for. Sheesh. What is up with this? I was confused. Called the captain (I am trying to avoid names as I get a growing audience), but no answer. So I call Hass, a guy from work. Too bad for me, he is in a mushy state. Oozing sympathy and talking about how it really is hard to get over your ex. Uhhhh....forgot that he has a few lingering issues. Not my best choice for feedback.

So, do I call him out? Maybe after the full moon phase it will all go away. He will feel silly and I don't have to bring it up. Yeah, see if it goes away. I like this plan. Well, I'm leaving the apartment cuz the internet is to tempting today. Things keep running through my mind, so I am heading to a coffee shop, or something. Machiatto to the rescue.

I hope that the next song I can relate to is something frivolous like Dancing Queen.

Update: Right after I posted this, X called. I debated answering, but decided to face it upfront. Yeah, I know. Just can't leave it alone. Anyway, after listening to his new "dot com" idea for about 20 minutes, I decided to call it short with a "we need to talk, but later". He is calling and I hope to set a few things straight. Perhaps refresh his memory to how our relationship really went?!?

Exploring.

Today I got up and decided to go out exploring (well, after sleeping in).

First, I had to pick up some stuff at Wal-Mart and when I left, it was raining. So I headed off on a little drive. So far, every where I have headed has pretty much been south of my apartment. So, I took off going North. Found a Bed, Bath, and Beyond that I was looking for the other day and saw a few new eating places I'd like to try. Local place called Five Guys that serves sandwiches and more stuff from an Italian bistro called Mimi's. As it quit raining, I headed off for Ybor City.

Ybor City (pronounced ee-bohr) was explained to me as something like the Haymarket back home. I was really excited to see the shops and the local eating places. (Not to mention the parking is cheap. $1 for the first three hours!) Ybor City is the original cigar rolling district. The original architecture is still there, too.
Photobucket

However, I found out that it was more like downtown Lincoln. The shops were all modern chains, alternative styles or vintage clothing. I did find an ice cream shop that makes homemade ice cream and also mixes things in like Coldstone. I got the cinnamon ice cream (a lot like Ivanna Cone's) and the mixed in a piece of fresh apple pie. They literally cut a slice of a pie there and mixed it in. It was awesome! Every third or fourth store seemed to be a tattoo parlor, but some of the bars and restaurants seemed cool. They have a Coyote Ugly bar, a greek restaurant, and Irish pub and this place....
Photobucket

Ahh....Captain shall have to come down and we will plunder and guzzle ale as we get pirate souvenirs and gifts. Yearghhh....And when we are done, you can get yourself and wench and I shall find a strapping sailor so we can head into their courtyard for......
Photobucket

There are trolley rides and a movie theater too. Though it is not at all like the Haymarket (not an antique in sight), it was pretty cool.

Disney part two

So. While we were stuck on the Pirates ride that never came, E made a call. With her unlimited resources and Disney knowledge, she got us VIP tickets to "Fantasmic". So, off we head to Disney MGM. On the way back, we get to sit in the front of the monorail with the conductor. (Evidently, all you have to do is ask!) It was so cool heading through the grouds midair in the front.

As we parked (very close since this is the area she works in), we head off to The Rock'N Roller Coaster. Waiting in line, she gets a text (another perk), the ride is down! ARE you KIDDING?!? Four rides in one day. E said if we had been regular visitors, our day would have been comped. That is how unusual this is. Instead, we dash for food (which also took incredibly long --even a manager came in to help the crew) and then off to Fantasmic.

For those of you who do not know, this is a night even in an open amphitheater around a little lake with a hug mountain/island in it. On that island, we see Mickey step out. He starts directing the water cannons until he "creates" a huge fan of water dead center of the lake.
Photobucket

Projected onto this fan are scenes from "The Scorceror's Apprentice". As he brings up the waves in the picture, real waves appear. Then comes Fantasia scenes. It was so awesome!! (30 second flick)

Then comes the whole plotline. Mickey is up against all Disney villains in his dream. Hades from Hercules, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, The witch from Sleeping Beauty and of course, the Wicked Queen from Snow White with her magic mirror.
Photobucket

For a brief moment everything is okay, the princesses come out and dance, John Smith falls in love with Pocahontas, and the Lion King is born in the forest of Africa...
Photobucket

But then, Mickey must face the Witch in Dragon form.
dragon

She sets the lake on fire, but using Excalibur, Mickey defeats her.
Photobucket

Everyone comes out to celebrate...
Photobucket

And then, the finale....(1 minute flick)

I was so moved by it all. It was so incredible and artistic. Seeing some of my favorite characters larger than life. (I wish that the Lion King photos would have turned out too. They proud out huge animals painted in blacklight sensitive paint that the made to look like they were moving around while the music played.)

After the show, we finally made it onto the Rock'N Roller Coaster and then headed to the Tower of Terror. It was incredibly cool. We rocked out on the roller coaster to "Dude looks like a lady" and then on the next ride were visited by Twilight Zone ghosts as we were dropped about three flights in an elevator shaft that opened up so we could look out at the park.

Thanks to E for showing me around. It was the best moving present anyone could ever give me. She even took me on a mini dessert tour. We had fresh Tollhouse cookie ice cream sandwiches (The cookies were still warm!), Dole pineapple icecream, and then the grand finale of desserts, banana bread pudding. It was sinfully delicious. She is so amazing and I could not imagine seeing the park through the eyes of a better person. Someday, I think I might be able to say I know one of the CEOs of Disney.

Hope I did not go off too long. I will update you on other goings on later...

My first trip

Hooray Disney!!

So for my first trip down here in Florida, I went to visit E. It was soooooo fun. As we were discussing what to do, she volunteered to show me around Disney world, where she works. YEAH!! Disney!! I was very up for it.

We started off at the Magic Kingdom. It was pretty cool to finally get to see the castle up close. On the inside there is even a glass mosaic mural in 6 panels (I think...) each about 12 feet high and six feet across depicting the sleeping beauty story. It's very cool.
Photobucket

Next it was off to see Mickey. E asked if I wanted to see him, I got all giggly like a five year old. As we passed by Minnie's house, Goofy's barn and multiple rides, my childhood started to come back to me. Then we waited in line. E continued to fill me in with cool little detials the entire time. Such as:

At Halloween you can actually purchase Mickey shaped pumpkins. They put them into molds when they are small so they end up shaped like the classic head with ears logo.

Also, Mainstreet in the Magic Kingdom is patterned after a small town in Missiourri that Walt Disney lived in for five years. He thought that Disney World should portray a small town feel.

There are "Hidden Mickeys" all over the park. They are hidden in street lights, architecture and foliage.

THEN. Finally.....
Photobucket

He gave me a hug and I felt like I was being hugged by a movie star. (Well, I was, wasn't I?)

As we headed off again, it started to rain. E said that I am now truly a Floridian, for I have walked through Disney while it is full out raining... Here we are in our stylin Disney ponchos.
Photobucket

As we continued on, we came to Frontierland. It is patterned so that you can experience the country as you walk. You start off in an area that resembles Maine and the Northeast. Then you head towards the colonies where we stopped at the Hall of the Presidents. They show a wonderful short film about the struggles of how our country was formed and at the end of the film, the curtain raises to reveal the presidents. ALL OF THEM, life size and moving as if they are alive! Each president is depicted in animitronics. It begins with George Washington who stands and addresses the crowd. Each president is highlighted as they are listed all the way until George W. Bush. Then he provides a short speech (actually spoken by GW.). Each president is built to the exact size and if they wore glasses, they are even the correct prescription. Also, GW's speech was evidently written and recorded before 911, but his part of the exhibit did not open until after. As is spoke of our great nation and the struggles it has endured, I got chills. (E told me this fact, but says that his speech may have been altered, she can't remember though she says it was quite erie at the time because she did hear it right when it opened.)

As we travel through the midwest area, I get to see Florida's version of pigeons. They were on every rooftop and picking up scraps on the ground.
Photobucket

Then we decided to head for some rides. After passing up the long lines at the World Famous Jungle Ride and Splash Mountain, we head for the Pirates of the Carribean ride. An announcement came on just as we got into the boat. Here is a picture of us after......
Photobucket
.......after waiting for 20 minutes and finally leaving through the back entrance since the ride broke down!!

So instead we went to walk through the Swiss Family Robinson fort. Remember it mom?! Too bad there was no Fritz or Ernst waiting for me in one of the hammocks. Man, now those were some good looking guys. Who doesn't want a hottie with a tan who can build her a dream home with a skylight out of bamboo, leaves, and sticks?
Photobucket

Then, we headed off to the Buzz Lightyear ride where you get to shoot little laser guns at target to kill Lord Zorg, laughed at the comedy show put on by Mike Wozowski at the Monsters Inc. show, and then finished it off with the Tomorrowland ride. (However, we first went to Tommorrowland, which broke down when we got there, and then had to wait 10 minutes for another "technical difficulty" break on the Buzz Lightyear ride.)
I won the at the Buzz Lightyear ride and the Monsters Inc. comedy show was hilarious as they highlighted people with spotlights and involved them in jokes. (One couple when asked where they were from said "Iowa". The monster claimed to know everything about human geography, so he told them all about Iowa, including the fact that it houses the Eiffel tower. --Each place he asked about housed it.)
Tomorrowland was a space roller coaster. As you shoot off into the dark, you are zooming through stars and planets in the background that are projected onto the walls and the track itself. It was trippy.

Speaking of tomorrow, I'll let you all resume this journey with me later since I need to head for bed. Stay tuned!

Wed part 2 and it's only 11 am.

Well, got everything done. Things should be okay, other than the whole insurance debate.

So, I am finally going to do something for myself. I am headed off for Orlando to see E. I'm so excited. Haven't seen her since April, and it was a very strained meeting. (As I said, she is not getting along with K and M, the Tampa friends.) I understand both sides of the issue, so I am letting it work itself out, I guess.

Well, off to get some sun and have some fun!

Break from insanity

Okay, so I thought I was on the ball. I had an application in for insurance and called my manager to find out when I start getting paid per analysis. However, Murphy's Law strikes.

Dad informs me that the insurance sucks. Not only that, but pretty much every insurance agency in Florida does not cover oral contraceptives. Hey, I can't help it that they help. No, it's not a diagnosed medical condition. I just prefer to not have a week every month where my body goes completely haywire from my face to my feet causing me to want to sleep for about 7 solid days. So, panic ensues.

Then, I call my manager and she tells me "yes, just turn in the last two weeks work log tomorrow". Um.... I though I was still salaried through July??? Evidently when I asked when my new pay scale kicks in and she said August, she meant the check that will cover August's rent. Oh and she follows it up with "I know that it is a short pay perioud..." Crap. Crap, crap, crap.

Well, lucky form me you ladies were right. I have done nothing but work. So, if I did two analyses today, I am good. However, when I panic, I shut down. So, instead I am writing to you before I start my second analysis at 1 in the morning my time. Nice to know I don't have to go back to work at 8 eh?

I hate it that I shut down when I panic, but I'm worried. I need insurance, even though a few friends have told me that I can let it lapse. (For some reason, I'm just sure that is a bad idea.) I have alternated between working at half the normal pace and checking things out online. Stupid, stupid me. Never think you have it all figured out. Oh well, I'm sure somehow God will quit laughing at me and let it all work out. Man I hate being the but of his jokes.

All apologies

Okay, so a few days ago I went off on the computer guy at work. Well...as usual (well I hope not as usual), but Murphy's Law got the best of me again. It was not his fault. In fact, he spent nearly 45 minutes on the phone with me to try and fix it. Well, it turns out that the names the ladies in research give the files and folders is too long. Nice.

So, all I had to do was rename the file folder "Performance evaluation plus interview data_including initial analyses", (Yup, that was really the name) to "P".

Worked like a charm.

Nothing much else is going on here. Still have not made it to the pool. (I'm really wary of the lightning. Remember the storm I was telling you about? Well, three people went to the hospital after being hit by lightning!!) Well, back to work. I am going to work ahead and then spend the day in Orlando tomorrow with E. (She is my other friend here that I was going to room with. I can't wait!!!)

Fat camp

So, I love my friend dearly (and I hope they never find this blog), but being at their house is much like fat camp to me. I went over for a"study date" and dinner with K where she worked on school work and I did my actual work. It was a nice change since this is what my friend Eric and I used to do in Lincoln (man, do I miss that kid).

Anyway, I went over at about 3 pm. Knowing them, I ate at about 2, but was not starving. I also figured that they would eat dinner somewhere around 6 pm. When I asked what time we were eating, she said about 6:30. I brought a granola bar (I simply have to have a little something every three to four hours) and ate it around 5. Well, perhaps I should not have went running yesterday. We finally started cooking at 6:30. I was starving and she kept raving about her whole food and organic chicken. I. Don't. Care.

I love partially hydrogenated everything and added high fructose corn syrup. Give. It. To. Me.
It's in all of my favorite foods and it probably causes cancer. But so does running since I am exposed to smog and the damaging sun while I do it. ---Sorry, got off track. Anyway, they ran out of soy sauce so they had to get more. I was on the porch on my phone when her husband came stalking out after dropping off the groceries with the bottle of soy sauce in hand. "Did you get the wrong one?"

"I don't want to talk about it." ....Okay. So I finish my call and go in to talk with K. She states that the one he got was in fact the less sodium kind, but it had corn syrup in it so she refused to use it. Thirty minutes and two grocery stores later, he finally arrives with the correct bottle and we get on with dinner.

Was it delicious? Yes. I love thai peanut chicken. I am even going to get the recipe to post. Did it taste different since it was sooooooooo good for me? No. Did it seem worth the effort? No again. She knows that she is a little wacky about her food, she says it all of the time. But I still get preached to. She can taste the preservatives now. It is sooooo nice to know that her chicken is not fed growth hormones. Oh man. It's like a version of fat camp, well actually it's more like going to an all you can eat pasta buffet with someone on Atkins. What's the point? I get good food, but the company is always the main factor.

This weekend

Well, just to update everyone, besides reading Harry Potter, I went to an art show in St. Petersburg. It was a good time and I really enjoyed seeing all of the art work. Everything was very bright and had manatees, beaches and pelicans in it. There was even a lady who had horses on the beach in her photos. Guess I won't be seeing much of prairie pictures and old barns. (Though there were a few tobacco barn paintings that made me feel right at home.)

I was going to go to the pool, but have decided that after a week off, I should probably hit the gym. We have a newly equipped fitness center here, so I don 't have to run along the highway inhaling car exhaust.

Then, work, work, work.

Mr. Potter......

It is 4 am Tampa time, and I have just finished the final Harry Potter book. (There will be no spoilers here, so continue reading....)

For nearly the last seven years (I was late to jump on the bandwagon) I have become a part of her world. I laughed and cried while reading the books and then sat in awe at her imagination and her ability to convey it through words. I also admire her for bringing her work to a stunning and satisfying conclusion. Not one prediction could even compare to what she dreamed up. Happy reading to you all (don't scare Jay too much OM), and I am off to bed for what will most likely be a fitful sleep where I relive every battle, quest, and heartfelt moment of this last book.

Ah. Gotta love the sentimental posts.

Tossing and turning

I'm beginning to think that I work with idiots. I hope that I can explain this well......

I use a databased program for my work called SPSS that is like Excel but a pimped up version. So, I handle huge data sets with almost 1,000 participants measured on over 100 variables. So I tell the tech guy setting up my laptop that I need SPSS. Instead of using the software that we bought (he's not very good with software, that's another person in the department's job), he downloads an evaluation version from the internet. EXCUSE ME?? If he would have asked, I would have told him that it is a limiated program that does not let you use larger data sets. I can open smaller ones, but the one with the deadline coming up is not accessible.

When I emailed him, he wrote back "I already installed it on you computer *shrug*". Do you suppose he thinks the *shrug* at the end is cute? I mean seriously. I was so angry when I went to bed that I tossed and turned all night. I kept imagining the CEO (that coincidentally is the nice gentleman here in Tampa who has been super helpful) yelling at me for not following through on my deadlines. ARGHHHHH!!

I'm getting angry. And you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

UPDATE: I appears that this "oversight" may actually be a program glitch. I shall keep you updated...

Houston, we have a problem

A little issue here, a little issue there.

Found 1 roach in the kitchen sink, figured it came in with the moving and such. Then, found one in the bedroom closet! The CLOSET?!!? How the heck did he get in there. I didn't even have food in the kitchen, let alone the bedroom! Talked with mom, and she was right, they were kinda dying, so they must have already sprayed. (Actually, I went to the office today and they confirmed that the apartments were just sprayed last Wed.) Bought 8 of those heavy duty roach motel/killers. I feel like every corner of the apartment should have one, but I am trying to control myself.

Went to eat at Sonic last night. It is a block away and they are redoing the drive thru, so they brought the food out on trays just like if you were to pull into a stall. There were two cars behind me, and they were BOTH served before me. I waited another 5 minutes and then just drove off. I mean really, I ordered tots and a fricking corndog. Just put them into the fryer, it's not rocket science.

Got a desk and put it together.

It came in a box and is pretty big, so there were lots of pieces, including the boards that are laminated on one side and just plain compressed board on the other. (The non-laminated side is supposed to face the wall. Well, needless to say, I did not put it together correctly. So, now I have a crappy side to hide as I decorate.

(Accidently deleted the photo....)
(Notice that the top is all fake-wood-looking and the bottom looks like crap? That particular board was supposed to be on the inside of the opposing shelf. Dangit!)

This was all finished off by my laptop not reading the install disk for the printer. (I am typing this as it finally finishes printing my analysis for today.) I had to reboot the whole system to get it to read it.

Hope the rest of the day goes better.

P.S. to the fam. Mel's hubby Jay (No, I am not referring to him like this cuz I think I should, but merely to avoid posting last names.) has started his own blog. He is "Daddy Warbucks" and is quite funny.........Sorry Mel, but I have to spread the love and the humor.

I almost forgot!

My friend Evelyn just planned her first visit down! She will be here to see me over Labor day weekend, and I am so excited. My first visitor!! (Though I have to give my girl Brandy props, because she has a trip planned September 20th and let me know about it before I even moved!!)

Here is a video she made for me.

P.S., As I watch it again, I realized how many inside jokes are referenced. A former friend once indirectly called her fat and me kinda slutty (hence the nicknames). We deemed each other soulmate upon our first meeting. The Good For You poster is also an inside joke that I put on a sign, leading her to flip me off during her marathon (it was seriously funny...though not the best idea to hold it up at mile 20 of 26.)

Oh, and Jacque...the pregnant pictures are me in costume one Halloween.

Hope it works, I just wanted to give posting a video a shot.

Shopping

So, last night I go to get into bed....but I don't have one. So I head back out to the car to get the air mattress. I set it up to inflate and head to the bathroom to get ready. Check the bed, check the email, shut off all of the lights and then head for bed. No sheets. No pillows. No nothing. By this time I am too tired to truck it back out to the car so I grab the one flat sheet I have already brought in and an ipod pillow I received from the girls at work (though I have no ipod).

Anyhow, I decided that today I am going to get a bed, but don't head out until after one. Did a lot of online scouting and then checked out a few local stores. I felt like I got a sweet deal for a queen size mattress, box spring, frame, scotch guard-y treatment, hypoallergenic water resistant super human mattress pad, and free delivery for about $750. (Mom thinks that I could have found a great bed for about $300. Pretty sure that has not been possible since the invention of the pillow top mattress.)

Then headed off to Best Buy to get a TV. (I HAVE to watch my show tomorrow night. More on that tomorrow, I'm sure.) A very nice gentelman from Iowa helped me out and off I went with a sweet 26" LCD flatscreen. However, I could not get a single soul to help me out in the printer section, so I am going to Circuit City across the street tomorrow. You'd think that I could get service with my new ultra nerdy glasses on.

Needless to say, it was an expensive day, but as I told my dad, I learned that there are a few things you should not go cheap on. Beds, TVs, and Washer/Dryers. Have the washer/dryer (Nikki--it's like DOUBLE the size of the last one!!!) so I just knocked my two big splurges out of my things to do list.

This morning I also set up the security for my wireless router so no one else can steal it. All by my lonesome. Hey, I'm pretty proud here.

As I walked out of Best Buy, the sun was setting. It was gorgeous. I was so afraid that I was not going to be satisfied with the end of the day like I was in NE. I kept remembering in New York and in the Mountains of CO when it went from afternoon straight to evening with no pretty skies. Needless to say, I was satisfied.
Photobucket

Added photos

Added a few from the journey. Expect many more over the next few days!
(I hope that the sizing corrects itself, cuz a few of them WILL NOT SHRINK for some reason.)

First day

Well, it started storming right after I finished my work for the day. Kristi says that it is the worst storm they have had all year. It was quite impressive from a thunder standpoint. Evidently the low elevation (resulting in higher temps and humidity) increases the volume of it. Though I could hardly see the lightning flashes, I jumped with every peal of thunder and my whole apartment shook.

Went and saw Ratatouille. It was cute. We went to theater in Ybor City, but I was disappointed when we simply walked in and walked out rather than stopping for a drink or anything. Oh well.

When I got home, the rain had stopped, so I unloaded my car until the sweat started to drip off of me. The trunk is empty and there are about six boxes left in the car.

Another exciting thing is that I can PAINT my apartment! Yeah! No more white walls! Now I have something else to do while I am here.

As I sift through all 100 of the emails I have acquired in the last two workdays, I found this. So here is an inspiration for you all: (careful, emotional content) :)

http://www.stservicemovie.com/

Home sweet home.

I am there. Made it in about 1 pm and had the internet guy coming in at 2. However, it took them almost 45 minutes at the office to get my paperwork in order, but I figured that I could get some work done before the cable guy got there. I told the waitress that if he was there at 2 when I got the timeframe from 2-5 pm, he'd be the first cable guy in history to come in the first hour quoted. Yeah. God is laughing at me. I got the call, he was 10 minutes early.

Not only that, but there was a very nice gentelman cleaning my apartment. His parents own the place and this is his summer job. However, between the two cable guys and the maintenance kid, my apartment smells. Like a men's locker room. It could take me the rest of the day to get the smell out. Too bad I have to finish work first. Speaking of.....gotta run.

My first view of home.....

Late, late, late

Just got in to the hotel at Valdosta, GA. I'm only about three hours from Tampa, so I can get plenty of sleep before heading out for the last leg.

I had a few musings today:

As I was driving, I was entertained by a few people and got to thinking about where they are headed. One was a horse trailer. I have never seen one like it. All of the horses must have been lined up diagonally in the trailer because along the left hand side were five noses sticking out. It was seriously funny just seeing these equine nostrils sticking out of what look like portholes on the side of a ship.

I also passed a lady that was brushing her teeth. We were just outside of Nashville and I wondered if perhaps she was getting ready to meet her boyfriend and wanted to be "kissable" or if she simply just had some great chicken she couldn't get out of her teeth.

The last one was a group of high school kids. I could not get around two cars to get back into the right hand lane "fast enough" for them, so this 17-year-old stared me down as they finally got to pass. I mean really, how bad do you think she thought she appeared sitting all casual and smug like in a honda while she stared down a 26-year-old going 80 mph? Kids.

Also, I am extremely good looking to Southern gentlemen who eat at Wendy's. I did not receive all of my food, so I simply approached the drive through window. (I parked to eat since the dining room was closed.) The guy waiting for his food casually leered at me and said "You have incredible eyes." This was followed by another guy honking as he drove by. I bet they get all of the girls with those moves.

My final thought is this. For some odd reason Georgia smells like cabbage. I don't know why, and it is not a constant state, but never the less, it seems to occur every 50 miles or so. Weird.

Must go. I actually have to get up to work a bit tomorrow. Also, I will hopefully be able to post pics tomorrow.

First night

Stopped just outside of St. Louis last night. Things are going well, but driving at night sure is boring. I think mom and dad are a little nervous with me heading out on my own. Mom wants me to check in every hour and they ended up calling ahead to book me a hotel last night. I stayed at the Red Roof Inn and the ladies there were wonderful. They even moved one of their cars so I could park in front of the office and they said they'd watch my stuff! Very nice!

This morning I slept a long time. Decided not to set the alarm, so woke up at 10 am. When I was checking out, a gentleman asked me about my NE plates on my car. When I said I was from there and went to school there, he commented that he had a buddy that used to go there....played football, too. When I asked who, he said "Lawrence Phillips". Huh. Small world. I didn't really know what to say about that, but I will admit, I am still impressed by his athletic skills even though I...let's say "question" his personal choices. He wished me luck and now I am just updating here and checking my email before I head out. (By the way mom, the "panera like" place is actually a branch of Panera called the St. Louis Bread Company.)

I'm off and if you all get bored today, you should give me a ring. I'm hoping to make it to the Florida/Georgia border. I might have to stop and get another book on tape. It really passes the time!!

Just leaving

At my sisters getting ready to head out for the long drive. Thanks to Nikki for helping me back and clean, (as well as Evelyn and Katie and Jeff were a huge help today!!)

First of all. I am the best packer in the world. I got almost everything in my car while still being able to see out of my back window. Hooray! I didn't think that I would be sane if I could only use the side mirrors for a 22 hour drive. I say almost because I had a few "I might take this" boxes that did not make the final cut.

(Check out my mad packing skills)

Had a great time at my going away shindigs. Talent Plus people joined me for a drink after work and then off to Sportscasters with a few more friends. I also got to tease my friend Faith about stealing my thunder because she got engaged that night!!! The ring is gorgeous and I am so excited for her and Jesse, her fianceur. (My bro coined that one. It's like employee:employer, trainee:trainer, so fiance:fianceur. Gotta love Brett.)

Well, hope that all goes well with the first leg even though I am starting out a lot later than I hoped. But, I feel a lot better about the state of things that I am leavnig behind and the amount of stuff that I am taking. Here we go!

No secrets here.

Okay, so no family secrets as Jacque thought. I really have no idea what Nikki is talking about with the whole not asking but receiving thing. But, we have a huge Fourth of July party every year for work. This year, a statistical consultant that we have been working with showed up solo. Since he didn't have anyone else to chat with, we hung out together for most of the eve. (He's like 50 and married with kids, so not that kind of hanging out.)

He's a really nice guy and as we were chatting, Florida came up as did me wanting to pursue the PhD. Well, being one of the top consultants and having colleagues who teach at USF, he said he'd love to write me a reference letter! Aiiieeee!!! I'm so excited.

Said goodbye to my parents and niece on Sunday. It was hardest with Alaina, because I can't talk to her on the phone and she doesn't know that it is good-bye. However, we ate late at Runza and as we were running around she just giggled and giggled at me. She laughed so hard she acutally got sick. It was really funny (after I cleaned her up while she continued to giggle.)

Mom didn't cry until they pulled away, but too bad for her she left something in my car, so I chased down the truck. She just continued to cry. Oh well, gotta love moms.

Too much to do!!

I have so much to tell about but no time to type. I have to pack up the last of the apartment, but already moved out the furniture. Then clean, clean, clean. But in between I am going to see a friend's new place tonight, seeing Harry Potter, and being taken out tomorrow night by family friends. (I did not get to talk to them at the Freedom Fest party for work, so they are taking me to dinner. The reason for that is a different exciting story!)

Here are the things I shall fill you in on later:
1. At our work party I got props from a leading statistical consultant.
2. Figuring out who my real friends are (seriously, just move if you are wondering)
3. Saying goodbye to everyone
4. Thoughts on leaving Nebraska

Now I shall not forget.

New look

Well, I changed the look and will be updating, but for now I have to go finish packing! (And yes, I added another day to my countdown since I am not leaving until Saturday morning.)
